back to you: how to build a lasting routine

back to you: how to build a lasting routine

As the heat of summer fades and the days grow shorter, there’s a collective shift towards finding our footing again. As we return to routines and practices that ground us, we can rediscover what inspires us and makes us feel more like ourselves each day.

Best of all? Building or refreshing your routine doesn’t necessarily mean you need to let go of the summer spontaneity and joy. Instead, use this time to explore what you love, reconnect with your goals and create space for what matters most–starting with these four steps:

reflect on what grounds you

Before diving headfirst into a strict routine, take a moment to pause and reflect on the season that has passed. What activities made you feel most aligned during the summer? Was it a morning yoga practice? Perhaps daily walks in nature? Or maybe it was savouring morning tea on your balcony. Each glimmer of peace and presence can be a powerful anchor as you transition into the Fall. Remember that these grounding practices can carry throughout new months, even though they might look slightly different. Most importantly, ensure that your new routine is a source of comfort, rather than stress.

start small to stay consistent

When testing out a new routine, you might feel pressured to change everything all at once–but that often leads to burnout or overwhelm. Instead, start small. Incorporate one to three practices that can blend into your day without a major overhaul. From a five-minute meditation to a gentle yoga practice before bed, consistency is most important. As time goes on, every small action will become second nature. Not only will this help you feel more in tune and balanced, but it will also leave room for newer rituals in the long run.

prioritize joy

Your dream routine shouldn’t feel like a drill or a rigid schedule–it should be flexible to support you as your life evolves. It should also leave room for activities that brighten your mood and make you happy. Whether trying out a new hobby, reading a book or spending time with the people you love, joyful moments are just as important as the other elements of your routine.

embrace the impact of rituals

Rituals are a great way to add meaning to your routine and make it uniquely yours. It could be as simple as lighting an evening candle or writing in a gratitude journal. These small acts of mindfulness will help transform a list of to-do tasks in your routine into a purposeful practice that nourishes your body, mind and soul.

As we ease into the newness of a different season, remember that your routine isn’t about reaching perfection–it’s about finding a rhythm that benefits your well-being, no matter what each day brings.
