embrace the healing energy of summer through movement and mindful practices

We all know that being in nature can do wonders for our well-being—reducing stress, boosting energy, and improving everything from sleep to immune function. With summer in full swing here in the Northern Hemisphere, there’s no better time to shift our movement and mindfulness practices outdoors to embrace the healing energy of the season.

Bring your b, mat outside for a mindful pause on your lunch break, or perhaps step away from the city for an extended retreat. To help you get started, here are two simple yoga practices you can enjoy, surrounded by the warm embrace of summer:

sun salutations

This morning practice, often performed at the beginning of a yoga session, symbolizes the sunrise and has deep historical roots. Surya Namaskar, which translates to "Sun Salutation," has its roots in the Vedic period, where the sun was revered as a deity and source of life, containing a set of rituals that included chanting mantras and making offerings. Over time, these practices evolved into a physical sequence of postures expressing devotion to the sun. Sun Salutations emphasize physical health, mental clarity, and spiritual growth, where the sequence synchronizes breath with movement, stretching and strengthening the entire body.

Practicing Sun Salutations outdoors on your b, mat traveller can bring a deeper layer of connection to nature—feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin, hearing the birds singing, and breathing in the fresh summer air.

sitali pranayama

For a cooling effect during hot weather or emotional intensity, try Sitali Pranayama, or "Cooling Breath." This technique involves curling the tongue into a tube and inhaling through the mouth to draw in cool air, which helps lower the body’s temperature and ease stress. Rooted in Ayurvedic traditions, Sitali Pranayama is designed to balance excess heat and soothe the nervous system, offering relief from heat-related discomfort and enhancing overall well-being.

Pairing these practices with time spent in nature can bring even greater benefits.
